Archaeological artifacts stored inside the Granary, Pompeii, Italy. The Granary is located at the northwest of the Forum. It would have been used to store grain for sale. The Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. The buried mummified citizens of this natural disaster left cavities in the volcanic lava and ash which archaeologists filled with plaster to create casts of the victims.
